With over 15 years of experience in Client Services and Legal Operations, Reef found a gap in Diversity and Inclusion in almost every team she was part of, there was a lack of representation not just in professional environments but also in conversations taking place outside of the workplace. Reef wants to change the scope of DEI by challenging employers’ values to align with a better operating business and workforce.

Before Monolith launched to offer its services to clients, we conducted large amounts of research which demonstrated that one of the biggest industries that is lagging in Diversity, Inclusion and Equity is unsurprisingly STEM.
The Science, Tech, Engineering and Maths Sector has a significant number of lesser Women and those belonging to Ethnic Minorities.
Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) encourages innovation by harnessing varying backgrounds, points of view, and experiences. In a recent report by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), women, as well as Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Alaska Native people are receiving more degrees and are in science and technology professions more than in past years.
But despite the change in numbers — those groups including people with disabilities — remain underrepresented in STEM. Systemic racism, gender discrimination, and other conscious and unconscious biases woven into the educational system are some of the impediments that underrepresented groups face.
STEAM Ahead and organisations alike are working to combat these challenges to increase the overall number of underrepresented students in STEM.
