Beyond Awareness: Addressing Unconscious Bias in the Workplace

In recent years, society has experienced a significant transformation in our lifestyles, modes of self-expression, and methods of communication. This shift is evident in the modern workplace, where the composition of the workforce has changed dramatically over the past twenty years. This transition has been long overdue and necessary for adapting to the changing times.

Alongside these shifts comes the topic of unconscious bias, which refers to when somebody forms a quick opinion about a situation or person without being consciously aware of it. Our brains naturally form biases by using knowledge of stereotypes, cultures, and other assumptions of the situation or individual.

Whilst we’re not aware of our unconscious biases, but they do impact the way we behave. Left unchecked, unconscious bias can have a detrimental impact on the workforce.

These assumptions can have a damaging effect in the workplace and those who we work with. Whilst this topic has been widely discussed we wanted to share how unconscious bias can be addressed in the workplace to develop a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Here are a few ways Monolith Consultancy recommends eliminating unconscious bias in the workplace:

1. Admit the unconscious bias exists

Recognising that unconscious bias exists is crucial to addressing it and creating a more inclusive workplace culture.

Acknowledging unconscious bias doesn’t mean accusing individuals of intentional discrimination but rather highlighting the natural tendency for humans to make assumptions based on limited information.

By admitting unconscious bias, individuals are encouraged to examine their own thoughts and behaviours to identify areas where they might be unintentionally biased.

Addressing unconscious bias through training and awareness can lead to a more diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone has equal opportunity to succeed.

2. Re-organise Your Systems

3. Choose Your Words

Declare your intentions about tackling bias and valuing a diverse team. Saying it out loud, or writing it down, sends a clear message to everyone you work with, as well as to your own subconscious. Use language that is clear and non-biased in internal documents, job descriptions and other management practices.

4. Be open to feedback and change

Finally, it’s important to be open to feedback and change. If someone points out that you’re exhibiting biased behaviour, don’t get defensive or dismissive. Instead, listen to their perspective, try to understand their point of view, and make a change to ensure you’re being more inclusive.

Reducing unconscious bias in the workplace is not an easy task, but it’s a necessary one. By educating yourself, being mindful of your behaviour, practicing empathy, and fostering diversity, you can take steps to create a welcoming workplace for everyone.
